Our body always sends out signals that something isn’t right. We get busy with our daily lives, sometimes soo busy that we have no time to listen to what our bodies are telling us. When it comes to cancer, not listening can have catastrophic consequences. Catching it early can increases the chance of cure. Knowing the early warning signs is the first step.
The early warning signs of cancer include
- A new lump or thickening that you can feel under the skin. More so if the lump is painless. Painless lumps are the commonest signs of breast cancer. Many women think that no pain means no harm and do not consult a doctor in time. Fortunately not all painless breast lumps are cancerous. Best to consult a doctor and let him/her decide.
- A wound or ulcer that does not heal can indicate a cancer. In india this usually means an ulcer in the mouth that may indicate an oral cancer. Smokeless tobacco consumption is common in India, tobacco in the form of Gutka, paan with tobacco or just plain tobacco. Oral Chewing tobacco in any form increases the risk of oral cancer.
- Red or white patches on the mouth may either indicate a cancer or a condition that may progress to cancer.
- Difficulty in swallowing may indicate a cancer of the food pipe.
- Hoarseness of voice or intractable cough may indicate a cancer of the voice box or a cancer of the lung. These cancers are common in smokers. Smokers often have cough because of the effect of tobacco smoke on the windpipe and the lung. They may ignore the cough and that can delay the diagnosis of cancer. Smokers should quit smoking. This unfortunately does not eliminate but only reduces the risk of cancer. Current and former smokers need to be very watchful and consult a doctor for any intractable cough.
- Sudden weight loss particularly with fever when you’re not trying can indicate an underlying cancer.
- Feeling extremely tired all the time, a fatigue that rest doesn’t fix may also indicate an underlying cancer.
- Changes in a mole or a skin sore that just won’t heal.
- Unusual bleeding or discharge from any part of the body.
- A nagging cough or hoarseness that doesn’t go away.
- Changes in your toilet habits, like persistent constipation or diarrhoea.
So, should you be worried if you notice these warning signs?
It’s wise to be alert, but there’s no need to panic. These symptoms don’t automatically mean you have cancer. In fact, they are often caused by other, less serious health issues.
However, it is very important not to ignore them. Think of these signs as your body’s way of telling you something is wrong and you need to visit a doctor. A doctor is the only one who can determine the real cause of your symptoms.
Seeing a doctor gives you a powerful advantage: the chance for an early diagnosis. Finding cancer at an early stage is the single best way to maximise the chances of a cure. These warning signs are your opportunity to get checked. Please, take that chance!!!
Remember, your body is your best friend. Paying attention to it isn’t about being scared; it’s about being smart about your health. If something feels off and persists, please don’t delay. A simple check-up with your doctor can bring peace of mind and is the most important step you can take for your well-being.
